Premack Principle is when the dog understands what is expected and has to decide if it will do what you want to get what it wants.
Imagine your boss says, "Hey...finish this report by end of today and you will get a free trip to the park this weekend." While you do not want to do the report...you will bust your ass to get it done by the end of the day to get those park tickets.
Let's face it, dogs (and most humans) do things only if it benefits them. Very few animals are hardwired for selfless service. So we must find what the dog wants and desires and use it for MOTIVATION to get the dog to work for us.
Technically we use the Premack in basic food training. We lure the dog into a sit to teach the sit. Then when we put it on queue, the dog must sit on command to get the treat. Eventually, those treats will lose their appeal and the dog will get burnt out and not focus. That is why we, as trainers, must always find what is keeping the dog engaged with us and keeps them MOTIVATED to work for us.
I like to use treats to create behavior and then quickly remove them from training and build motivation up by switching over to high value reward items and use the Premack Principle to get the dog super focused on working.
